Introducing Boss Hair and Makeup Artist Lou Pye

Today’s interview is with our new Hair & Makeup Artist, Lou Pye.  Working in the beauty world for 15 years, Lou’s worked for a range of clients in multiple locations across the world including a recent spell in Bali. She is back in the UK and we are delighted to introduce her as part of the BOSS family.

Hi Lou, it’s lovely to meet you. Tell us how you got to where you are today?
My first job was with MAC where I worked for 6 and a half years. I worked myself up through the ranks to Management, and then the Events Team which I just loved because I got to work London Fashion week and all the cool festivals. After that, I decided to take the plunge into freelancing and never looked back.

What was FW like?
Amazing and carnage at the same time. One moment it’s all chilled and things are going steady, and then it’s final call and it’s all hands on deck! I have never done makeup on models so quickly!

What was memorable about your first work as an HMU?
Getting to work with such a varied range of brands. Ecommerce was really taking off at that time and becoming a very fast-paced industry that I loved. I also got to be whisked away to some fabulous location shoots in Paris, Barcelona, and the unforgettable one was Morocco.

So, what took you to Bali?
I originally went out there with friends as a holiday and I just loved it. The next thing is I followed my instincts, sold my house and off I went for a year and a half with a spot of travelling in between to South America.

What made you want to return back to Manchester?
Bali was never going to be a long-term thing, more of a bucket list thing really.  It was an amazing experience, it had everything, but the work was limited and I always knew I was going to return home.

Welcome home, what made you want to work for BOSS?
I got in touch with Boss because of the reputation it has and the amazing clients it works with. I’m really looking forward to the next stage in my career and working with lots of new and exciting people.

So how do you like to spend your downtime?
I’m a real book worm.  My favourite recent reads are A Little Life, a real intense life story of 4 friends, and Call Me by Your Name which is a romantic story that was set in a period of time when being gay wasn’t acceptable. I also love autobiographies such as Wonderland Avenue, the Danny Sugarland story. To be honest, anything that has a gritty real-life heartfelt storyline.

As well as kicking back and reading, if you hadn’t had already guessed it, I love planning my next adventure. I adore travelling and I really want to go Vegas for my 40th – and would just be so excited to do a trek in Nepal or the Himalayas. Watch this space…

If you had a dinner party who would you invite dead or alive?
Debbie Harry – She was my everything when I was younger. I even met her on my birthday once, I was so star struck ha.

Indya Moore – Actress in the current Netflix series Pose. She is such an inspiration; strong and powerful.

Jarvis Cocker – Who I once saw at Manchester Town Hall for a talk. He is so knowledgeable

…and Kate Moss – just because she’s a classic! Growing up in the 90s she was so rock n roll, yet so professional. My favourite shoot of her is the classic Calvin Klein campaign where her look was so minimalistic.

What makeup techniques do you like?
Less is more. Living in a Kardashian world has also brought a whole host of new techniques including cut crease effects.  Brands like Beauty Bay have brought a lot of experimental styles into play and that’s what I love about my job –  every client and brief is different, and you never know what look you will be creating next. It keeps you on your toes!

Top 5 makeup products?
Well, this has changed over the years as I went Vegan 5 years ago. My kit has now changed to cruelty-free brands. My current top 5 would have to be:

Cruelty-Free Ordinary Serum Foundation, it’s so versatile, great for building up, making it matt or sheer.

I’m currently also obsessed with Charlotte Tilbury and their magic cream moisturiser. Which you can wear under and over foundation.

What do you love about being a hair and makeup artist?
How social it is and getting to meet so many people. When you are on a shoot everyone is behind the same goal. It’s always great vibes, fun and professional at the same time.

Thank you so much, it’s been lovely getting to know you. Good luck with everything and we can’t wait to hear how you get on.

If you’ve got it, haunt it! 👻

Things are getting spooky at BOSS HQ and we are freaking out about this year’s Halloween special!

The best costumes start with the best makeup and we couldn’t help but get spooked out by some scarily good Halloween looks created by our fabulous BOSS Hair and Makeup artists, Liz Rochford and BOSS newbie Cydney Beasley.

Creating this year’s look on BOSS Juniors model Nell Jackson is Liz Rochford with an awesome spider illusion on the eye. With a steady hand, Liz applied clever shading of the legs along with a smokey eye base and white highlights.

Creeping it real was Cydney’s skeleton look on New Faces model Harry south. There’s a reason the skull is a Halloween classic and when done right, this look kills at parties. Cydney has achieved a spooktacular one! I think you can agree they both look BOO-tiful!

Ok enough of the puns. Here’s a short vid showing behind-the-scenes footage to their looks, enjoy……mwahahahahah (evil laugh).

Boss Stylist Becky shares her top tips for AW19

Today marks the first day of Autumn, the nights draw in, the days get shorter, and we’re suddenly frantically looking for our winter warmers! London, New York, Milan and Paris Fashion Week offered a whole host of trends earlier this year for the cooler seasons ahead, so we caught up with our amazing BOSS Stylist Becky Bowyer who gave us her top tips for AW19.

Hi Becky, tell us all…

So this is the time of year I always have a wardrobe clear out. I push those summery lightweight fabrics into hibernation and pull forward all the cosy knits and winter boots.

For me, Autumn means layering. I love mixing textures and bringing those autumnal tones into my wardrobe. I’d say my favourite trend to come through this season is ‘tone on tone’ dressing. It’s an easy way to be super stylish and makes outfits look expensive and thought about.

Please find below my latest tips and trends. I hope it helps you know what to invest in and add to the wardrobe this season…

photo: Salvatore Dragone /

Tailoring makes a strong appearance. Suits are oversized and masculine with strong shoulder silhouettes.

Becky’s tip… “buckle up and clinch in oversized blazers at the waist with chunky belts”

photo: the style stalker

Get ready to streamline your handbag essentials as bags dramatically shrink. The Micro Bag is THE accessory of the season.

Becky’s tip… “Jacquemus and Acne Studios for designer vibes or Boohoo and PLT have cute copycats.

photo: Filippo Fior /

The 80s super sleeve returns, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Viktor and Rolf were amongst many to strut their wings down the runways of Fashion Week.

Becky’s tip… “Let the drama be in the sleeves and keep the rest of your outfit super simple.

photo: Filippo Fior /

Pastel tones particularly Pistachio give a softer touch to the season and we see this continue into the new decade.

Becky’s tip… “Wear tone on tone, match pastel knits with similar tone tailored trousers and smart skirts. Mix textures rather than colours.”

Call it the Bottega Veneta effect, square fronted shoes are stepping up for another season. From mules to sandals and now winter boots these square toes have their feet firmly on the ground.

Boss Models take over at MMU Fashion Show

Last night it was the ultimate Boss takeover at Manchester Metropolitan University. With two mesmerizing shows, our Boss boys and girls wore original, unique and stunning top quality designs made by the next generation of budding fashion designers.

Assisting backstage with Hair and Makeup we had our super talented Boss Creatives Chelsea Graziano, Donnette Lathbury, Jemma Davenport & Olivia Stappleton who created some gorgeous looks.

There were many incredible strong pieces down the catwalk and beautiful attention to detail. We are incredibly honoured to be part such a special night with Manchester’s top fashion school and to support the journey of new talent entering their careers into the fashion industry.

Thank you, MMU for having us and best of luck to the Fashion Design and Fashion Design Technology students graduating this year.

Boss lands 2nd Place in The Dragon Boat Festival 2019🥈🙌

Last weekend the Dragon Boat Festival saw us come 2nd for the second year running.

With glorious weather and a lot of laughter, Boss Model Management would like to thank everyone for their support and donations to Barnabus.

We would also like to honour our team captain Jennifer Overend who put all this together, it wouldn’t have been possible without her.

From the woman herself, here are a few words 🙌

”Thank you so much for all your help in raising money and awareness for Barnabus and the success that was Dragon Boat Day! It was a great day, the perfect line-up, blue skies and we had such an amazing turnout for support.  Also, a special thanks to Gareth our Planning and Strategy Master for ensuring everything was organised in my absence the week before and leading up to race day, and to our Vice-Captain Matt who led all the team talks and kept motivation up especially when we needed it most.

With everyone in good spirits, our first race saw us finish first place in a speedy time of 0.57.87 seconds, which is a massive improvement from last year’s first race time.

Out of 18 boats who took part in the event over three heats throughout the day, only three of us qualified for the final which is such an achievement in itself.

For the final race the excitement was high, teamwork was on form and the team did not disappoint. We rowed our way to a 2nd place victory and I could not be any prouder!

Thank you again to everyone, the whole team, supporters and all who donated to such a good cause and helped spread the word via social media. Carol and Yvonne from Barnabus were touched by everyone’s generosity and even though they raced their own boat on the day, they routed for us right through to the finish. The Just Giving page is still open so please keep spreading the word if you can: – Jennifer Overend, Boss Model Management Accountant & Dragon Boat Team Captain

Thank you

Boss for The Dragon Boat 2019 – Supporting Barnabus

It is that time of year again. The Dragon Boat Festival is back for 2019!

Over the past two years, Boss has been a part of the Dragon Boat Race which is a team-building charity event. We like to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charity Barnabus.

The day is full of fun and laughter where we boat race over the beautiful Salford Quays against 19 other teams/organisations.  Last year we were the underdogs going into the final but with hard work and determination, we walked away with a second-place trophy!

Barnabus is our chosen charity that is close to our hearts. Supporting our local community by helping the less fortunate and vulnerable.  Being based and working in the centre of Manchester we see first-hand the effects of homelessness and people living on the streets.  We understand that it is a challenging time for many so we try to do what we can.  The whole team here are passionate about giving and helping others, so the more we can do to help the better.

As well as participating to raise money for Barnabus, the overall boat race is a great event to be a part of.  It’s family friendly and the competition offers lots of fun and excitement for all teams and anyone supporting.  It’s also important for us to spend quality time with our artist and models outside of the work environment. With plenty of food, music and laughter it isn’t one to miss.

If you would like to support Boss and Barnabus for The Dragon Boat Race 2019 please visit

Thank you

In the day and life of an MUA: Chelsea Graziano

From working on different sets with different brands, campaigns, models and briefs, the life of an MUA can be a busy one.

Our Boss Creative Chelsea is no stranger to this. Working with Boohoo every week and various other brands, we wanted to know what it is like for the life of an MUA.

Here is a BTS exclusive!

Early starts, I arrive at Boohoo HQ around 8.30am to set up all the paints and potions. There are usually around 12 of us in the glam team from hairdressers to makeup assistants.

9:00 am

giphy (1).gif
At 9am the model arrives. We start by skin prep which helps to create a soft glam look. Once the skin is prepped, the makeup begins. The ultimate go-to products at Boohoo are lashes, contour and highlight. My fave products currently are Illamasqua highlighter, Benefit’s OMG powder, Hula for bronzing and Eldora false lashes.

At the moment beautiful bronze eyes, winged eyeliner and gorgeous glowing skin is the current style. This is finished with a neutral lip and lots of gloss. Make-up varies depending on the theme of the shoot, so it is different every day.

Once the face is complete it’s time to move on to hair. Prepping the hair is just as important as prepping the skin.

I start with a smooth blow dry and then add volume to the hair, finishing with some texture powder and spray. To get the hair to stay in place all day I add heat protector and setting lotion so the curls stay in place.

giphy (2)

Around 10.30am we head to the studio and start working through the rail of new clothes.

I always bring a set bag with me to keep lips skin and hair topped up. I usually give a quick tease and fluff of the hair between shots and top up of the skin where needed. The models work their magic on set until 1pm when we have our lunch!

After lunch it’s back to the makeup station. This is when I spend around15 minutes topping up the skin and hair ready for the last few hours of shooting.

in between shots, same stuff with giving a quick tease and fluff of the hair and top up of the skin where needed

Once the shoot is wrapped up, it’s time to remove all makeup. There is plenty of cleansing water to remove all makeup. I make sure that the skin is finished with some good and much needed hydrating moisturisers and serums.

Here come the girls! #BalanceforBetter #IWD2019

As well as having a super awesome and inspirational female owner, Boss boasts many incredible women within our 22x strong staff. All with varied backgrounds, qualifications and individual talents, we love to champion amazing ladies.

To celebrate International Women’s Day the staff here at Boss told me who their favourite inspirational lady is and gave their reasons why!

Debra Burns, MD

Michelle Obama is my current crush.  From a difficult start in life with no privileges and rising to be a totally dignified and respected First Lady of the first black president of the USA is impressive on many levels.  I’m reading her autobiography at the moment, a rich and diverse account of her life.  I’d love to meet her.  What a tremendous ambassador for her favourite charitable work with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Healthy Child Healthy World, and Peace Players International.  You are much admired

Phil, Casting Booker

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was the first name that sprung to my mind! After my wife and Debs, obviously…and all the other Boss ladies… You’re all amazing!

Phoebe, Junior Assistant

I have a couple, couldn’t just pick one!

Lady Gaga – The only woman to win the 5 big awards all in one season (Oscar, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Grammy, BAFTA).  She also officially supports over 20 charities and 24 causes.

Ruth E. Carter – Costume designer on Black Panther (one of the first major movies to have a predominantly black cast with accurate references to African culture including within the costume design) and she has just won an Oscar for her work on the movie.

Brie Larson – Captain Marvel comes out 8th March, TODAY! (International Women’s Day).  She is the first female lead in a Marvel movie and is really inspiring for young women.

Emily, Model Booker

I really admire Ellie Goulding! Alongside being a super talented singer/songwriter, she is also the Global Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment programme. Her passion and contribution towards raising awareness of issues such as plastic pollution and illegal wildlife trade, I find so inspiring.

I was lucky enough to swim alongside sea turtles in Australia. However, video’s like the below highlight the ongoing issue of pollution & make me worry about the future of the animals in our oceans.

Everyone, please recycle so that we can help save our planet!

Robyn, Model Booker

Mine is definitely Amal Clooney – A self-acknowledged refugee born in Lebanon, Oxford-educated barrister dedicating her life to helping people fight injustice, with her work covering the rights of women and refugees, as well as gun control, freedom of information and terrorism.

“Feminism, for me, is about choice, about women having choices. The challenges that women face today are completely different based on where they’re born. In some places, women are fighting for the right not to be genitally mutilated, in others it’s the right to choose who to marry, in others to have equal pay.” – Amal Clooney

I LOVE her style and grace. She’s definitely a female Boss.

Ella, Junior Division Model Booker

JK Rowling for me, for many reasons her incredible imagination and charitable work.

Despite a publicly difficult past she inspires me to keep going and to never give up 💫

Arooj, Digital Content Coordinator

Mine would have to be both Amal Clooney and Angelina Jolie.

As well as adopting and giving children a better home, Angelina Jolie has done a lot with Syrian refugees and has called for an end to war. The media can often be biased to how we see things and how we see people, so when I see people who have a huge presence in the industry being open-minded and doing what’s right, it makes me feel good.

Amal Clooney, literally echoing what Robyn said above. She’s amazing and so is her wardrobe!

Lauren, Head Booker

I have recently finished Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life and I was most inspired. Born into poverty and brought up in an orphanage, Coco Chanel had the vision, courage and passion to turn her life around for the better.

A genius of her time, a sheer hard grafter, a visionary and a party girl. Coco changed the face and shape of fashion; relaxing the restricted styles of time past. I love nothing more than frolicking on the beach and thank you Coco, we have beachwear! Along with wearing trousers, she made it de rigour that menswear wasn’t just for men and we are all equal. Happy International Women’s Day everyone!

Chelsea Graziano for ‘The Hot Sauce Tour’ – The Chicken Shop Date sponsored by Voxi.

Our Boss Creatives are busy bee’s working with many different brands and people.

Hair and makeup artist Chelsea Graziano has been up to some exciting things as she is a part of ‘The Hot Sauce Tour’ – The Chicken Shop Date sponsored by Voxi. She is currently designing and creating makeup looks on YouTube personality star Amelia Dimoldenberg.

Last week Chelsea created a 70’s themed makeup to match with  Amelia’s colourful and fresh style.

“We invented a modern spin on the classic 70’s eye using gorgeous blues and greens. The buzz of being around so many original, talented and dedicated music artists is part of what makes this job such a dream to be involved in. I am looking forward to the final tour date in London on 6th March” – Chelsea

Magic Mags meets Dynamo 🎩

On Friday the Boss team took an outing to see Dynamo’s ‘Abandoned Room’ show at The Lowry Hotel. This was perfectly suited to Boss’ very own in-house magician, Mags who works Front of House.

You may have seen her make a few appearances on the Boss Instagram story showing off some tricks, however on Friday she performed her signature card trick in front of world-renowned magician Dynamo, which was then featured on his Instagram to his near ¾ of a million followers!

The video has received over 68,000 views and lots of supportive comments for Mags and young magicians in the industry. Here are a few words from the woman herself:

Eek! How was it performing in front of Dynamo?
It was cool, felt strange to perform in front of a famous magician! Felt the pressure!

What did he say to you after you performed the trick?
He said it “was sick” and it was nice to see young magicians learning the art. His team filmed my chat with him and the magic trick and asked for my Instagram handle. It was so nice of him to post the clip on his social media!

So, will we expect to see you on stage soon?
I do perform locally in pubs and at friends parties but would love to progress to stage shows. Watch this space!

Anything you want to say to your new fans? 😉
Thank you for the support and to the new followers. Expect some magic on my Instagram soon!

You can keep up to date with what Mags gets up to over on her Instagram page: @LrnMag
