Catch up with Oliver Perry

Photographer Oliver Perry joined Boss at the beginning of September after his work came to the attention of our scouts, Working alongside them and our Model Bookers, Oliver has been busy shooting our New Faces Division & Development Board. We caught up with him to reflect on his time spent at Boss.

Hi Oliver, tell us about your time at Boss
It’s been a fantastic experience for me. Having the opportunity to work in an Agency, I have learned so much about how images are collated, processed and presented to clients. It’s very fast-paced to turn things around here!

The placement has also enabled me to work with a vast range of amazing faces. Before working at Boss I predominantly focused on shooting male models, but I have loved the opportunity to capture more female models too.

How have you helped develop the New Faces Division?
Working closely with the models we concentrated on their portfolio needs and made sure to capture a different side to them to broaden their opportunities of work. For example, they may have needed more simple stripped-back images.

Where have you been shooting?
Some of my shoots have been at the fabulous Loft studio space at Boss HQ, amazing for natural light! I have also shot models in and around the quirky Northern Quarter, but my favourite was shooting at MMU Fine Art Studios.  Thank you MMU!

Robyn                                            Wayne

What is your advice to models who are test shooting?
My advice for any models on test shoots is to practice making a connection with the camera. I always suggest that they should imagine the camera is a person they know and connect with it. After they have accomplished that, they can start to introduce different moves into it.

What’s your advice on anyone who is starting out in photography?
Boss was amazing at giving me the room to develop my own creativity on shoots. My piece of advice for any photographer is to make the model feel as comfortable as possible. Try relating to them in some way through conversation to help them feel more confident.

I got to find out some amazing stuff about our models such as their side careers like Alfie who wants to build and design trains, George Finlay who told us about life as a Farmer, and Wayne who has recently opened his first Gym! It’s all very interesting and part of getting to know the model and bringing out their personality.

Oliver, we’ve loved having you here. You have been a great addition to the development team.  We will miss your calmness and creativity, but this is not an official farewell as we look forward to having you back as a freelancer in the near future.  Have a superb Christmas! xx

Introducing Boss Hair and Makeup Artist Lou Pye

Today’s interview is with our new Hair & Makeup Artist, Lou Pye.  Working in the beauty world for 15 years, Lou’s worked for a range of clients in multiple locations across the world including a recent spell in Bali. She is back in the UK and we are delighted to introduce her as part of the BOSS family.

61207184_364855277483980_3408303833896914321_n

Hi Lou, it’s lovely to meet you. Tell us how you got to where you are today?
My first job was with MAC where I worked for 6 and a half years. I worked myself up through the ranks to Management, and then the Events Team which I just loved because I got to work London Fashion week and all the cool festivals. After that, I decided to take the plunge into freelancing and never looked back.

motel christmas4

What was FW like?
Amazing and carnage at the same time. One moment it’s all chilled and things are going steady, and then it’s final call and it’s all hands on deck! I have never done makeup on models so quickly!

What was memorable about your first work as an HMU?
Getting to work with such a varied range of brands. Ecommerce was really taking off at that time and becoming a very fast-paced industry that I loved. I also got to be whisked away to some fabulous location shoots in Paris, Barcelona, and the unforgettable one was Morocco.

So, what took you to Bali?
I originally went out there with friends as a holiday and I just loved it. The next thing is I followed my instincts, sold my house and off I went for a year and a half with a spot of travelling in between to South America.

Unknown-1

What made you want to return back to Manchester?
Bali was never going to be a long-term thing, more of a bucket list thing really.  It was an amazing experience, it had everything, but the work was limited and I always knew I was going to return home.

Welcome home, what made you want to work for BOSS?
I got in touch with Boss because of the reputation it has and the amazing clients it works with. I’m really looking forward to the next stage in my career and working with lots of new and exciting people.

So how do you like to spend your downtime?
I’m a real book worm.  My favourite recent reads are A Little Life, a real intense life story of 4 friends, and Call Me by Your Name which is a romantic story that was set in a period of time when being gay wasn’t acceptable. I also love autobiographies such as Wonderland Avenue, the Danny Sugarland story. To be honest, anything that has a gritty real-life heartfelt storyline.

As well as kicking back and reading, if you hadn’t had already guessed it, I love planning my next adventure. I adore travelling and I really want to go Vegas for my 40th – and would just be so excited to do a trek in Nepal or the Himalayas. Watch this space…

If you had a dinner party who would you invite dead or alive?
Debbie Harry – She was my everything when I was younger. I even met her on my birthday once, I was so star struck ha.

Indya Moore – Actress in the current Netflix series Pose. She is such an inspiration; strong and powerful.

Jarvis Cocker – Who I once saw at Manchester Town Hall for a talk. He is so knowledgeable

…and Kate Moss – just because she’s a classic! Growing up in the 90s she was so rock n roll, yet so professional. My favourite shoot of her is the classic Calvin Klein campaign where her look was so minimalistic.

What makeup techniques do you like?
Less is more. Living in a Kardashian world has also brought a whole host of new techniques including cut crease effects.  Brands like Beauty Bay have brought a lot of experimental styles into play and that’s what I love about my job –  every client and brief is different, and you never know what look you will be creating next. It keeps you on your toes!

Top 5 makeup products?
Well, this has changed over the years as I went Vegan 5 years ago. My kit has now changed to cruelty-free brands. My current top 5 would have to be:

Cruelty-Free Ordinary Serum Foundation, it’s so versatile, great for building up, making it matt or sheer.

I’m currently also obsessed with Charlotte Tilbury and their magic cream moisturiser. Which you can wear under and over foundation.

What do you love about being a hair and makeup artist?
How social it is and getting to meet so many people. When you are on a shoot everyone is behind the same goal. It’s always great vibes, fun and professional at the same time.

Thank you so much, it’s been lovely getting to know you. Good luck with everything and we can’t wait to hear how you get on.

Lou Pye’s portfolio can be found here. Check her out!

Meet Tania Blake

Tania Blake, Boss Model and mum of Boss Juniors model Jamie, joined the agency last Christmas and has already been paving the way in adding even more extra spice to our Originals Division. We caught up with our Cheshire Boss beaut to see what she’s been up to…

_GSZ6228

Hi Tania, it’s lovely to have you in at Boss HQ. So tell us how did you first get into modelling?
I have always been a model on and off since the age of 15. It’s all I have ever known really.  I am originally from NW London and I‘ve been very fortunate with a long successful career in modelling working on some really exciting campaigns along with some amazingly talented people.

Some of them that stick out are working with Tess Daley on the Braun Hair TV commercial and when I was younger I was used on all the teen magazines, Just seventeen and Jackie!

Well, we’re delighted to have you with Boss. What have you been working on recently?
I’ve been busy! …Since I have been with Boss I have had the pleasure of working on shoots for JD Williams, Aldi, Trinity Shopping Mall and recently my favourite has been a campaign for Cotton Traders which was their first TV campaign ever and involved me wearing 5 looks to a coat, from casual to chic… I loved it!

What do you most love about Boss Model Management and modelling?
Since moving up north from London 8 years ago, meeting Boss Model Management has allowed me to continue to do what I love with a quality agency whilst being a mum too! I’m also enjoying seeing the campaigns my son Jamie has been working on. His favourite was a Disney commercial!

So when not being a model or a mum how do you spend your downtime?
I really passionate about my fitness and I love my weight training and yoga. Fitness has always been important to me not just for being in shape for a model, but I’m very passionate about leading a health lifestyle as much as possible.

Tell us something not everyone would know about you?I am also trained as a Primary school teacher.

What’s on your bucket list?
To carry on modelling as long as I can, I just love it! I’m also proud to be an advocate for the ‘over 40s’ model.  I think sometimes potential models are put off as they think modelling agencies are just for young people but it’s not like that and just because you’re a mum doesn’t mean your career stops. Since I have been with Boss there have been some fantastic shoots I’ve worked on.

Thanks Tania. We agree beauty has no age and girl you are rocking it!

The new period drama also includes our talented BOSS Supporting Artists. From soldiers to Nazi machine gunners, members of the Polish resistance and body doubles for main lead roles, our SAs got to step back in time to what life was like during the outbreak of the war.

Meet Jodie, our BOSS model booker and Yogi!

We’re delighted to introduce our new BOSS model booker, Jodie.  With a wide array of booking and tv casting experience, we caught up with our Liverpudlian girl to see how’s she settling into life at Boss.

Hi Jodie, lovely to meet you….how did you get to where you are today?
Hi! I first started working for Lime Pictures as a Casting Assistant at Hollyoaks in Liverpool. Interested in the media side of the industry, I decided to study at Edge Hill University where I gained a BA Honors in Media Film and TV. After this, I went on to gain valuable experience representing models and artists.

Boss Model Management was always the company I wanted to work for because of its amazing reputation as the most successful model and casting agency in the North. After spending some time working internationally and in London, I recently moved to Manchester and well… the stars have aligned and I’m super happy to be here on the Women’s desk at Boss.

What is your biggest success and what are you most proud of?
When I visited Bali last year I booked myself onto a 4-week yoga teacher training course. The week before I flew out I was so nervous about heading to the other side of the world on my own, but I did it, and the experience was phenomenal, definitely a proud moment of my life. I loved it so much I ended up staying out there and exploring Australia.

What do you most enjoy about being a Booker
For me, what I most love about being a booker is helping someone’s professional career and personal journey.  Helping them fulfil their dreams and career goals is immensely satisfying.

Who inspires you the most?
I would have to say I have a girl crush on Zoe Kravitz at the minute, she’s amazing, a truly spiritual cool girl, I love her style!

What do you get up to outside of work?
Yoga all day, every day, and anything that involves being outdoors! I love getting up at the weekend and heading out for a nice walk with my boyfriend and then some lovely food with family and friends. In the week and after work, it’s usually a Netflix series. I’m loving Peaky Blinders at the mo!

What’s on your bucket list?
Well, I love travelling so my next hit list is the west coast of America, LA, and San Francisco. I would also love to do Route 66!

Welcome on board Jodie – we are all happy to have another a hard working, focussed and dedicated booker in Team Boss, and are looking forward working with you.  You’ll fit right in!  When we need to keep calm you can teach us some yoga meditation …..

He commented,

“For a director, something like Fleabag only comes along once in your life…Thank you Phoebe for coming into my life like some kind of glorious grenade. Scientists are still trying to work out how someone so incredibly talented can be so utterly lovely.”

Also killing the awards was Jodie Comer for her outstanding performance as the ruthless assassin Villanelle in BBC America’s Killing Eve topping off an extraordinary year for the actress who also won a TV Bafta in May for the same role.
